The Lourdes Group 2012 have had a successful six months with different fundraising events. In May there was four male members of staff who had their legs waxed to raise funds, a non uniform day and a Promise Auction which was enjoyed by all. The Lourdes Group have recently attended a predeparture mass in Leeds with four hundred other youth who will be travelling to France with them. The group is very much looking forward to the journey, even though the staff aren’t! Also everyone is looking forwarding to assisting the sick pilgrims and getting closer to God.
Five members of Staff, Mrs Rogers, Mr Jackson, Mrs Heagney, Miss Kaye and Mrs Ryder went on pilgrimage to Lourdes with forty two fantastic students. Miss Kaye has said, ‘We set off on Thursday 5th July with everyone in good spirits ready for a lengthy coach journey. Everyone was placed in teams to register with more easily and Mrs Rogers gave each team a nickname. When we arrived in Lourdes we unloaded the coach and ran straight into the hotel for lunch. The activities started pretty much straight away and from this point on they never stopped! Many activities had been planned by the youth team including singing, fiat sessions and a picnic. As a school we also had time to visit the grotto at night and spend some time there on our own. The students really benefited spiritually taking part in Mass daily and also reconciliation. The absolute highlight of their trip was being able to love and serve the pilgrims from Huddersfield. I was so proud of our pupils for befriending their pilgrims so quickly and chatting to them like they had known them for years! Our students were very responsible too; they got to know their way around Lourdes very quickly and would spend up to two hours of free time with their pilgrim going around the shops and cafes. Even though the grotto was the most popular area of the domain everyone agreed that the underground Basilica and Rosary Basilica were beautiful too and our pupils were reverend during mass. We have some photos on the website of our pupils having their hands blessed at the start of the week and supporting their pilgrims during the sacrament of anointing the sick. On the journey home many of our students were wishing they could stay another week! I know they will continue with their journey of faith into year 11 and they are very excited about assemblies about Lourdes in the new academic year in which they will teach all years some of the songs they enjoyed in their final liturgy. Thank you to all staff and students who made the week in Lourdes one of the best weeks of my life.
